Central Oregon Community College’s (COCC) Chandler Lecture Series, a program of the COCC Foundation, presents “Wildfire,” a presentation on the history of fire in Central Oregon, along with a panel discussion on this year’s fire season outlook and an overview of some community resources, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, at Wille Hall on the Bend campus. The event will begin with a look at the region’s history with wildfire by Ariel Cowan, regional fire specialist at the Oregon State University Extension Service, and then shift into an interagency panel discussion, facilitated by Rebecca Franklin, assistant professor of forestry technology at COCC.
Panelists include Ariel Cowan, Jeff Crawford, fuels planner with the U.S. Forest Service, Thomas Stokely, forest ecologist at The Nature Conservancy, and Ben Walen, forest resources manager at the Oregon Department of Forestry.
Discussion points will include efforts underway to prepare for coming wildfire season and the role of community members in wildfire preparedness and resilience.
The Nancy R. Chandler Lecture Series of the COCC Foundation brings renowned speakers, lecturers and experts to the region to deliver broad-based programming on a diverse range of educational and topical subjects. The program was established in 1985 by the late Robert W. Chandler Sr. in honor of his wife.
