One person is dead in officer-involved shooting on Bend Parkway. According to Bend Police, at approximately 8:17 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, Bend Police responded to a report of a non-injury motor vehicle crash on the northbound Bend Parkway at milepost 136 near Butler Market Road.
When officers arrived, multiple witnesses told police that a vehicle had been driving recklessly and speeding, nearly causing several other crashes.
Officers located the suspect vehicle and its driver at the scene. At approximately 8:30 p.m., a Bend Police officer fired his service weapon and used deadly force during an encounter with the driver.
Officers at the scene attempted to perform life-saving care.
The officer involved will be placed on paid critical incident leave as the case is investigated. This is standard procedure.
Both the northbound and southbound lanes of the Parkway were closed between the Empire Avenue and Revere Avenue exits during Wednesday night’s investigation.
The Tri-County Major Incident Team is investigating the incident, and Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office will oversee the officer-involved shooting investigation.
