Work Begins On New Roundabout In Sisters

sisters803859

Starting the week of March 4th, travelers can expect N. Locust Street to be closed at U.S.20 as work begins on a new roundabout. Traffic will be detoured to N. Larch Street and Main Street. Cascade Avenue will remain open during construction. N. Locust Street will be closed through the end of May.

Work on the southern leg of the roundabout is expected to begin in June, with closures of S. Locust Street and Hood Avenue planned in June and July. Jefferson Avenue will also be closed mid-summer as additional improvements are constructed at its intersection with U.S. 20.

East/west traffic on U.S. 20 will remain open the entire duration of the project. The majority of work continues to Memorial Day, with additional work into the fall.
Please see rerouting map for traffic flow during closures. The project is expected to be complete in Fall 2024.

The Locust Roundabout will be a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of US 20 and Locust Street. The project enables an alternate route to US 20 and the Barclay Drive industrial district. This bypass, especially when used by commercial trucks provides a safer route through the US 20/Locust Street intersection, which sees the highest number of vehicle collisions in the city.

The Locust Roundabout will provide enhanced pedestrian and bicycle crossings, new sidewalks to and from adjacent side streets, and a multi-use path along Locust Street. The Roundabout will slow speeds for vehicles heading into town, helping to reduce congestion and preserve the integrity and pedestrian-friendly quality of the City’s downtown core.

Cost for the project is estimated at $7.06 million to be funded by Street SDC, URA, County & STIP Funds.
