The Chandler Lecture Series at Central Oregon Community College (COCC) welcomes gerontologist Marvin Kaiser, Ph.D., former Portland State University dean, and his presentation “Birth to 100 Years: Embracing the Opportunities and Challenges of a Century-Long Life” at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Coats Campus Center on the Bend campus. Kaiser, who has traveled the world observing how seniors thrive, will cover current trends and statistics in the field of gerontology. Reports indicate that some 50% of individuals born in the U.S. in 2000 or after are expected to live to be centenarians, and the presentation will explore the impacts that longevity has on individual lives, society and the planet.
The event then shifts to a panel discussion of how people at every stage of life are navigating a new and changing map of life in the 21st century. The panelists: Sierra Barnes, development and communications manager at Bridge Meadows multigenerational housing communities; Sara Henson, professor of human development at COCC; and Anabel Pelham, Ph.D., founding director of the gerontology program at San Francisco State University and founding director of the Center for Age-Friendly Excellence.
