Bicyclist Critically Injured After Struck By Car

 A Bend resident riding a bicycle was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle. According to Bend Police: At approximately 5:26 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, Bend Police responded to a report of an injury crash near the intersection of Powers Road and Business 97 in SE Bend. Callers reported a vehicle had struck a cyclist.

When officers arrived, they found the cyclist, a 34-year-old Bend resident, with life-threatening injuries. Officers and bystanders performed life-saving care to the victim at the scene before Bend Fire medics transported the cyclist to St. Charles Bend. The driver, 31-year-old Bend resident Samantha Schoene, remained at the scene of the crash and cooperated with officers.

An investigation determined that Schoene was driving a white Subaru Forester southbound on South Business 97 when she ran a red light at Powers Road and struck the cyclist, who was in the crosswalk. Schoene was cited for careless driving that causes an accident.

Members of the Bend Police crash reconstruction team responded to the scene to investigate the incident and the southbound lanes of Business 97 were closed for approximately two hours.

Bend Police were assisted at the scene by Bend Fire and ODOT.
