January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and the Anti-Trafficking Project (at:project) a Program of J Bar J, Central Oregon’s local responder for human trafficking, is inviting the community to learn, engage, and support survivors through two local fundraising and awareness events in Bend.

Human trafficking affects both urban and rural communities, including Central Oregon. At:project provides trauma-informed case management and crisis response to individuals who have experienced sex and labor trafficking across Deschutes, Crook, and Jefferson Counties.

In the last fiscal year, at:project served 110 individuals, representing a 15% increase from the previous year. The program also experienced a significant rise in labor trafficking cases, which more than doubled, highlighting a growing and often hidden form of exploitation in the region. Housing instability remains a major concern, with one in four clients entering services without stable housing. Self-referrals also more than doubled, becoming the program’s largest referral source—an indicator of increased community awareness and trust.

“Many people are surprised to learn that human trafficking happens locally,” said Breanne Barrett, Program Director of at:project. “These events give community members a chance to learn more, support survivors, and be part of the local response.”
