Know Before You Go

Crook County Search and Rescue (SAR) is reminding everyone when traveling, especially in higher elevations, to let someone know where you are going, when you will be back, and stick to your plan. Also take adequate food, water and warm clothing in case you get stuck regardless of the road conditions.

last Sunday, SAR responded to a partial 911 call of a stranded motorist in a rural part of Crook County, South of Prineville. Due to limited cell service only limited information was provided from the caller and call back attempts failed. Utilizing GPS data, SAR management determined a possible location as the area of SE Lakeview near the area of Bear Creek. Nine total SAR personnel responded to the call. Due to the limited known details of what caused the person to become stranded; three vehicles were taken along with the snowmobile trailer and a specialized tracked side-by-side.

Using new mapping software and GPS equipment, the driver and her car were located. On arrival it was discovered she travelled off the roadway and into the ditch – but was not hurt. She was provided a transport back into the Prineville area.
